Strategies for Success in General Education for Individuals with ASD

This 12-hour virtual workshop (six two-hour sessions) will focus on educating students ages 5-18 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who spend the majority of their day in the general education classroom following the standard course of study. Participants will learn about the characteristics and learning styles of ASD and strategies to address educational and social-emotional issues that affect success in the general education classroom.
The format of this workshop will include presentations, videos, interactive discussions based on case studies, and small group activities.
Objectives:
At the completion of training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the learning styles of students with ASD that are served in a general education classroom
- Develop individualized educational strategies to increase organizational skills, initiation, and active learning for students with ASD
- Address the social communication issues that impact the student’s learning in group
- Develop educational strategies to address social communication challenges
- Develop stress reduction routines and coping strategies
- Address challenging classroom behaviors using an antecedent-based problem-solving approach.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for general education and special education teachers, psychologists, speech and language therapists, and other professionals working with students with autism spectrum disorder in the general education setting and completing on grade level standard course of study.
