Initial Referral and Consultation

An initial consultation is done either in person or over the phone and is required to receive other services. The focus of this initial meeting is to discuss the family’s needs and to direct the family to both appropriate TEACCH services as well as other available services in the community.

Diagnostic Evaluation

Assessment for autism spectrum disorders performed by a licensed psychologist and other trained TEACCH Staff.

Early Intervention TEACCH for Toddlers – Weekly Sessions

TEACCH for Toddlers (TFT) is a comprehensive approach for toddlers with ASD and their families, incorporating naturalistic, structured, and behavioral intervention strategies. Family Implemented TEACCH for Toddlers (FITT) is our way of coaching parents to (1) understand how their toddler learns and (2) to use naturalistic and structured strategies to promote engagement. Interventionist conducts an initial Interview to determine a treatment plan and broad goals for parents and child.

Early Intervention TEACCH for Toddlers – Intensive Sessions

Early Intervention Group sessions bring a small group of children (and sometimes parents) together in a group setting to introduce the child and parent to a beginning preschool environment and/or further their curriculum goals in the areas of communication, pre-academic and cognitive skills, work behaviors, play skills, and social development. Sessions are time-limited.

Individual Parent TEACCHing Sessions

These sessions are available to parents of children with autism ages 3 through adulthood (and under 3 who are not able to be served by TEACCH for Toddlers Program). They provide an opportunity for parents to learn ways of teaching their child at home and to help deal with behavior problems, self-help, and other skills including communication and social skills. Sessions are time-limited and scheduled once a week, typically for 4-6 sessions.

Group Parent TEACCHing Sessions for High Function Children with ASD

These sessions are available to parents of school-age children and adolescents with autism who attend regular education classes. These sessions include both group lecture and discussion for parents and individual and/or group meetings with the children and adolescents. The focus of training is on characteristics of autism/HFA and how it impacts communication, social development, behavior management, and school services. Families are selected for group sessions based upon interest in group support services and individual needs.

Social Skills Groups for Individuals with ASD

Social Skills Groups (available in selected areas) are typically designed for children in regular educational settings who are verbally fluent. The focus of the groups is on helping individuals with autism practice social skills in a group of peers. Contact your local TEACCH Center to find out what types of groups might be available and what ages of individuals are served.

Adult Psychoeducational Sessions

These sessions provide an opportunity for adults with autism spectrum disorders to discuss matters of personal importance such as relationships with others or work. The sessions program is short-term (4 to 6 sessions) and goal-directed. It is not psychotherapy or a replacement for psychotherapy. This program is useful for independent adults who are motivated to discuss and work on goals for themselves.

Intensive Needs Sessions

Some clients with autism have intensive needs that require services above and beyond regular TEACCH sessions. Clients receiving these sessions typically have significant behavioral or emotional difficulties and have limited options for receiving services from other providers in their communities. TEACCH centers are available to provide more intensive and/or ongoing services to a limited number of clients. The ability to provide longer-term services is based on client needs and staff availability.

On-Site Professional Consultation

TEACCH provides consultation services to local school systems, group homes, and other agencies providing services to individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Agencies can request a consultation for a program and/or an individual client.
