Description:

Adapting the Curriculum is a one day workshop designed to help general education and special education teachers learn strategies in adapting the Standard Course of Studies for students on the autism spectrum. Curriculum components will be addressed with an emphasis on supporting independent work behaviors for the student.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for regular education and special education teachers, assistant teachers, speech therapists and other professionals who work with students who have HFA/Asperger Syndrome.

Content:

High Functioning Autism (HFA)is defined as persons with a diagnosis of autism who have an IQ at or near average. Many students with HFA are fully served in regular education settings. This one day workshop will offer the rationale for support through adaptations and present numerous samples of adapted coursework. Lectures, small and large group discussions will be incorporated throughout the day.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be provided with:

  1. A greater understanding of the learning styles in students with ASD that affect the students' ability to learn through traditional teaching strategies.
  2. An understanding of structured teaching strategies and how these strategies can be incorporated in the regular education setting
  3. An opportunity to view and discuss a variety of curriculum adaption.  Workshop participants will also develop adapted instructional activities across subject areas and grade levels

Continuing Education Credits:

CEU's will not be offered for this training however a Certificate of Completion will be given at the end of the training. The certificate will include training contact hours.

Selection:

• Complete the application form.
• Payment for tuition should be made payable to TEACCH-Asheville and received by the first day of the training.
• Notification of acceptance will be mailed as applications are received. If the class reaches full capacity, participant will be notification of wait list status.

There are limited slots available for each training session. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Final deadline for receipt of application and payment is February 27, 2012. Spaces fill quickly.

$100.00 per day for In-state Professionals
$200.00 per day for Out-of-state Professionals
$50.00 per day for North Carolina Parents

Fee does not include travel, meals or accommodations.  Fee includes registration, breakfast food, snacks, beverages and supplies.
