EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR PROFESSIONALS WORKING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WITH ASD

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for infant toddler service providers, preschool service providers, teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals.

Content:

Since 1972, TEACCH has coordinated the nation’s largest statewide public based educational and treatment programs for children with autism and related communication handicaps. With current practices emphasizing least restrictive settings, many more children with autism and other severe behavior, learning and communication problems are being served in public schools, thus creating a need for in-service training activities for teachers. In recent years, TEACCH has made its training activities available to teachers and other professionals from around the world.

Objectives:

Early Identification and Development of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: This presentation will cover the early developmental markers as well as developmental profiles/characteristics seen in children with autism spectrum disorders. How these development differences impact behavior and learning will also be reviewed. (ITP credits – 2.5)

Collaboration with Families and Other Professionals: This presentation will discuss ways to collaborate effectively with families of young children with autism spectrum disorders. A parent panel with highlight and provide perspective on what has been most helpful in meeting their child’s needs. Strategies in working together with other professional team members with be shared. (ITP credits – 2.5)

Informal Assessment and Setting Up the Learning Environment: This presentation will demonstrate strategies for informal assessment of a child’s strengths, interests, emerging skills, and learning style and how this information is used to set up an effective, individualized learning environment. Structured Teaching strategies and how they help promote a very young child’s attention, understanding, and engagement will be reviewed and utilized in application activities. (ITP credits – 2.5)

Intervention Strategies and Setting Goals: This presentation will cover specific intervention strategies for building skills in key deficit areas for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders including ready to learn skills, communication, social engagement, and joint attention. Discussion will include strategies for utilizing parent information, reviewing formal assessment information as well as using informal assessment to set individualized child centered goals and teaching activities. Application activities will be included. (ITP credits – 2.5)

Continuing Education Credits:

Infant Toddler Program credits will be provided (10 credits) or contact hours for other professionals. Continuing education credits will not be offered for this training.

Applications are accepted through UNC-Chapel Hill Events Registration. Please click here for event registration.

Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is confirmed by email upon submission of application and payment. In order to guarantee your spot, please submit application before the deadline of April 30th, 2012. Space fills quickly! TEACCH workshops often reach capacity prior to the deadline. When all spaces are filled, applicants will be placed on a wait list and admission will be made on an “as available” or stand-by basis. If after April 30th, the Events Registration website does not indicate that the workshop is full, please call our office at (910) 251-5700 as we may still have openings.

Cost:

NC Residents: $180.00
Out-of-State Residents: $340.00

Registration fees do not include travel or accommodations. Fees for this training include snacks and beverages, lunch, materials and supplies. Please note that payments by check or purchase order should be mailed at time of application.

Information:

Cancellations received less than three business days prior to May 2nd are subject to a $25 cancellation fee. Refunds will not be granted after the program has begun. A substitute participant may be designated in place of a registrant who cannot attend. TEACCH reserves the right to cancel, post-pone or combine class sections; to limit registration; or to change instructors. TEACCH will make every effort to notify participants as soon as possible of any changes or cancellations. Participants should consider the possibility of change or cancellation when opting for non-refundable travel arrangements.
