This workshop will address strategies that have successfully contributed to a reduction in behavior problems with students on the autism spectrum. It will include a review of the characteristics of autism that often lead to behavioral issues, a review of Structured Teaching strategies that have been proven helpful, presentation and discussion of additional tools for managing behaviors. It will conclude with opportunities to apply the information presented.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for special education teachers, assistant teachers, speech therapists, and other professionals who work with children who have autism spectrum disorders.

Content:

This two day workshop will focus on understanding how autism affects behavior and then developing individualized strategies for students on the autism spectrum. Lectures, small group activities and a parent panel will be incorporated into the two days.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of training, participants will be able to:

• Recognize characteristics of autism and how structured teaching can be used to address behavior issues.
• Develop strategies designed to address behavior issues in students with autism

Continuing Education Credits:

CEU's will not be offered for this training however a Certificate of Completion will be given at the end of the training. The certificate will include training contact hours.

Selection:

• Complete the application form.
• Payment for tuition should be made payable to TEACCH-Asheville and received 30 days before the training.
• Notification of acceptance will be mailed as applications are received. If the class reaches full capacity, participant will be notification of wait list status.

There are limited slots available for each training session. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Final deadline for receipt of application and payment is February 21, 2011. Spaces fill quickly.

$200.00 per day for In-state Professionals
$400.00 per day for Out-of-state Professionals
$100.00 per day for North Carolina Parents

Fee does not include travel, meals or accommodations. Fee includes registration, breakfast food, snacks, beverages and supplies.
