Elementary, Middle and High School Principals and Assistant Principals, and School System Exceptional Children's Department Administrators.

This workshop will acquaint participants with learning styles and behavioral characteristics of students with high functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome from lecture and videotaped interviews with adults with HFA/Aspergers.  Gaston County’s Director of Exceptional Children’s Services will address the legal responsibilities and mandates for educating children with special needs, including children with autism spectrum disorders and answer questions.  TEACCH staff will acquaint participants with educational strategies geared to maximize students’ independence and competence to prevent behavior problems stemming from the spectrum disorders and resources their teachers can access.

During this training participants will learn about:

• The characteristics of autism and the learning styles of students with autism
• Areas of functioning the disorders affect, how they appear
  in daily functioning, how they cause difficulties for students,families, and school personnel
• Legal mandates for serving students with exceptionalities
• Structured teaching options for preventing problem behavior which can be more effective than conventional behavior management strategies

Only contact hours of attendance will be provided at this training for participants to use when obtaining credits from their own school system.

Due to the nature of this program space is limited and will be assigned on a “first come, first served” basis.  Once full, applicants will be put on a waiting list should openings become available.
