COMMUNICATION AND SELF-ADVOCACY: STRATEGIES FOR STUDENTS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

Description:

This three-day workshop will address communication and self-advocacy issues as they pertain to students on the autism spectrum whether they are nonverbal, very verbal or anywhere in between. We will learn to discriminate between language and communication, identify spontaneous verbal and nonverbal communication in real-life scenarios, and build successful and practical interventions based upon an individual’s independent level of communication. For older students, participation in setting goals and contributing to individualized plans will be emphasized as a means of self-advocacy. Building upon current research and work done by many in the autism field, TEACCH has developed strategies that will help professionals address difficulty with communication in the classroom or clinical setting.
