Preparing for Middle School - A Workshop for parents/caregivers

Participants will learn about middle school, available accommodations and modifications, friendships, and bullying. Information will also be presented on issues related to puberty including anxiety and stress, relaxation strategies and hygiene.

Attendees Target Audience: Parents of 5th graders with high functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome (who spend a majority of their day in the general education classroom following the standard course of study) and will be entering middle school next year. Interested parents of 4th graders are also invited to attend.

This workshop is intended for parents/caregivers of children with ASD (who spend a majority of their day in the general education classroom following the standard course of study) and will be transitioning into middle school. This workshop presents information and strategies that will help the child transition more easily. Participants will learn about middle school, available accommodations and modifications, friendships, and bullying. Information will also be presented on issues related to puberty including anxiety and stress, relaxation strategies and hygiene.  Parents/caregivers in attendance will receive a workbook to use with their child at home. The format will be presentations and group discussions.

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the middle school setting and the differences from Elementary School. 
  • Use strategies which are helpful as students transition to middle school.
  • Understand how the learning and thinking styles of autism can affect classroom learning and behaviors.
  • Create different organizational strategies that can be helpful for the student in middle school with regard to homework and class work.  
  • Develop strategies that address the increased social demands and challenges of puberty
