Preparing for Kindergarten - A Workshop for parents/caregivers

This workshop includes presentations and large group discussion focused on strategies to develop organizational and communication skills to prepare children for entry into the kindergarten classroom environment. The TEACCH approach to understanding the behavior of children with ASD will be used to help problem-solve behaviors that might influence learning and develop strategies to minimize potential behavioral difficulties.

Attendees Target Audience: Parents and caregivers of preschool aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are preparing for the transition to kindergarten. This workshop will be most beneficial for parents of children who will be included in a regular education setting with typically developing peers.

This workshop includes presentations and large group discussion focused on strategies to develop organizational and communication skills to prepare children for entry into the kindergarten classroom environment.  The TEACCH approach to understanding the behavior of children with ASD will be used to help problem-solve behaviors that might influence learning and develop strategies to minimize potential behavioral difficulties. The workshop will conclude with a panel of parents of children with ASD who recently transitioned to a general education kindergarten classroom.  This course is not intended for parents/caregivers of children who will spend a majority of his/her school day in a self-contained classroom.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize the characteristics of autism that may affect a child’s learning in a kindergarten classroom
  • Learn strategies to help promote the development of communication and social skills as related to the classroom environment
  • Identify ways to assist teachers in the interpretation and management of challenging behaviors
